Where the Money Goes in a Bathroom

Bathrooms pack waterproofing, drains, wiring, ventilation, tile and carpentry into a few square feet, and every one of those trades needs its turn in the right order. Coordinating them is most of the job.

Old leaks and soft subfloor are common once the floor comes up. When we find them, you see the fix and its price in writing before it is done.

What a Bath Remodel Covers

  • Showers and tubs

A tub pulled out for a walk-in shower, a new tub surround or a full shower rebuild, waterproofed behind the tile so the framing stays dry.

  • Tile floors and walls

Floor tile, wall tile to the ceiling or partway up, niches and benches, all set on a flat, solid base so tiles stay tight and lines run straight.

  • Vanity, toilet and fixtures

Vanities, tops, faucets, mirrors and toilets, along with the supply, drain and lighting changes needed to hook them up where you want them.

  • Ventilation

A properly ducted fan that pulls steam outside, so mildew does not take hold on fresh paint and caulk around the tub or shower.

How a Bathroom Remodel Runs

  1. Choose before demolition

Tile, vanity and fixtures get picked and ordered first, so the room is not gutted while you wait on a shipment.

  2. Tear-out and rough-in

Old finishes come out, the subfloor gets checked, and drains, supply lines and wiring are adjusted for the new layout.

  3. Waterproof, tile and set

Shower waterproofing goes in, tile is set and grouted, then the vanity, toilet, glass and lighting are installed.

Bathroom Remodel Questions

Is it possible to replace a tub with a walk-in shower?

Usually. The drain typically has to be moved or upsized, and the floor and walls need new waterproofing. Both are listed in the scope so you can see what the conversion involves.

What makes one bathroom remodel cost more than another?

Moving the toilet or shower drain, how much of the wall is tiled, the tile itself and what turns up under the old floor. Keeping fixtures where they are is the biggest single saver.
